Germany’s Zugspitze

Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany and is on the Austrian boarder.  It is about an hour away from Munich in a town named Garmisch-Partenkirchen . Many people use public transportation to get there; however, since we had a car we decided to drive.

My excitement started when we could see the top and were still on the Autobahn.

Grew when we exited A95 to some of the town’s roads.

Continued with the cable car ride.

And then we got to the top…

I HATE cold weather.  Although I was prepared physically for it (sweater and a jacket with gloves in the pocket), I wasn’t prepared psychologically.

It was May.  Call me naive, but I wasn’t expecting to see 0 degrees Celsius as we walked off the cable car, let alone a huge pile of snow as soon as we reached the observation deck.

My excitement quickly turned to “Why did I want to come here?” BUT then there was this…

I could see the alps in Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Austria. The views were breathtaking!  Definitely not something I will ever forget. Yes, I was cold. I also didn’t care at that point.  I think my husband lost count of how many times I said, “Wow!” and “Look over there!”  I know he was surprised that I wasn’t saying “OK, I have seen it, let’s go”.

Many people choose to take an active approach and those that reach the summit are greeted by a gold cross.  We were quite content to sit in the beer garden (with a new feathered friend)…looking at those starting and finishing their hike.

Like many places, signs are located at different areas showing the distance from other cities

Before we left, I had to cross over to Austria.

When it was time to leave, Michael asked me if I’d ever come back.  I looked at him like he had three heads…of course I’d come back.  I didn’t see how that could even be a question.
