Bamberg is a UNESCO world heritage site, which is one of the many reasons that the city attracts tourists. The area known as “Little Venice” is what caught our attention. It was once a fisherman’s village, and the half-timbered houses that frame the Regnitz River is where the fishermen lived. The area is very lovely. Definitely worth a photo stop.
In the pedestrian zone is the Gruner Markt. You can find fresh fruits and vegetables here during the summer. You can buy some beautiful handcrafts made by locals and if time gets away from you, you can always get a quick bite at one of the stands. During the holiday season it becomes the home of a Christmas Market.
The vibrancy of the fruits and vegetables was unbelievable. There is no place in Maryland that you can find that red of a tomato or strawberry.
We stayed at the Hotel Messerschmitt, which is located close to the city’s center and is very convenient for tourists. Someone walking through the baroque type door, and lobby decorated with dark wood, might not expect to walk into a very open room with a light and airy feel, but that is exactly what the Deluxe Modern room was. It was very nice to stay for the night.
It wasn’t important for us to visit inside every sight. We were content with just walking around the lovely city. There were no regrets when it was time for us to leave…it didn’t feel like we missed out on anything.
